Coconut is a mature fruit of the Cocos nucifera palm. It is one of very versatile and indispensable food item for millions of inhabitants of South and South-East Asia and Pacific islands.     I actually use coconut oil for my face at night because I’ve heard it’s good for your skin. I use refined organic spectrum coconut oil on my skin and love it. I also dabbled in cooking with coconut oil as a replacement for butter. I baked cookies with it and tasted the coconut still (which I like but not so much my husband) so I must have used unrefined coconut oil instead of refined. So is coconut oil a better alternative to butter? I like to think I’m baking/cooking healthier when I use it but I don’t want to be wrong and have it still be unhealthy.

    Hi Robert. Thanks for your article. I have an allergy to the ingredients in sunscreen. I actually use virgin coconut oil as a sunscreen when we vacation in Florida each summer. Not only does it protect my skin from sunburn but it makes my skin the envy of my wife. Do you happen to know which components of the oil might be protective? My dermatologist originally recommended it but didn’t go into detail as to why it works.

      Coconut oil has a natural SPF of 4-5 and contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from harmful radiation from the sun. Natural sunscreen! Obviously that low amount of SPF isn’t sufficient for a long day in the sun, so we add red raspberry seed oil and essential oils.

      There is no need to put it in the refrigerator it will keep fine. Here is some help regarding rancid. Use your senses to determine if coconut oil has gone bad. There is always a rancid smell to spoiled oil which you will notice when opening the jar. The white oil will also begin to turn slightly yellow in color.

    I use it for cooking and love the flavor.
    I have not tried any of the skin preparations but perhaps I should. The other reason I should use more coconut oil from reading your article s for the lauric acid which increases HDL, something we need to watch as we get older.
