Wayne Coates, an ultramarathon-running professor of agricultural engineering at the University of Arizona, entered the picture in 1991. I have been using Chia for several years know and have found it a great addition to my diet. Importantly, at least a tablespoon every day makes its way into my custom breakfast cereal.     I’ve heard so many good things about Chia, but still never got around to it. They sound like the perfect nutritional supplement to add to your diet and I’ve even heard you can add them to a smoothie! I wonder if these would give me more energy through out the day and I like the fact they contain lots of fiber. Nothing is as important as good digestion. The fact they consist of 20% protein makes this nutritional supplement a no brainer for me 🙂

      Thanks for your comment… Chia has become quite the turnaround from a popularly standpoint. It does deserve this reputation… Think about the impact of 20% protein with all the other nutrient benefits. A game changer. For myself the reduction in appetite has been the greatest benefit while also lasting a long time… Till next time.

    I know very little about chia seeds until I received some sample packs from the pharmacy the other day. Been adding it into my morning cereal, but haven’t really seen major changes just yet.

    But I am actually attracted to the idea that you can cut down on your lunch intake as a result of taking chia seeds. I usually chomp down a lot of carbs which makes me sleepy throughout the afternoon and add on to my waistline obviously.

    I might give this power food a try for the next whole month and see what goodness it brings.

      It seems you have grasped the importance of Chia, although there are other things important in our food choices. I heard a statement that I think applies here even though it is food….

      It goes like this. It is important to do what is important to those that are important. Cathy, that would be you. Others of course but you. None of us just showed up. We have experience. Give food a chance, it really can change things for us if we change how we look at it. What I am saying is Chia or anything that is worthwhile will not happen overnight. Good Health to you.     Great article on a product I knew nothing about until now. I do remember the chia pets but had no idea of the beneficial properties of the product. After reading your article, I think I’ll give the product a try as it offers a lot of excellent ways to incorporate it into my diet.

    Will be interesting to see what I may notice after a 3-6 month trial using it each day.

    • Travis, thanks for your comment. There are many ways to incorporate which you mentioned. Just this last weekend I added chia to my Buckwheat Pancakes which are awesome and extremely healthy on their own. However this added such substance as the chia expanded… really cool and very good. In addition I add them to my cereal every morning in case you hadn’t seen that. Regardless the nutrition is worth finding places for this unique food provided for us. All the Best…

    I recently tried some chia seeds in my smoothie and they’re pretty good. I like that they become gelatinous when added to liquid. Makes them feel more filling.

    I’m thinking about taking chia seeds backpacking with me. Do you know if they have to be refrigerated? I would be out in hot weather for about a week.

      Taking chia with you hiking is great. Here is some additional information.

      Whole chia seed will stay in good condition at room temperature for
      several years. There is no need to keep the seed in the refrigerator,
      whether kept in sealed bags or not. The seed’s natural antioxidants
      provide this stability. In the case of milled chia seed it can be left
      on the counter top for approximately a year. Keeping the container it is
      stored in will help to extend the shelf life.

      I love to hike and chia is a great with berries, etc while out in the woods 🙂
