Researchers have recently confirmed that a diet high in fruit and vegetables, (THE WHOLE FOOD DIET) especially those organic, is more ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY.
The study was published during the weekend in the Frontiers in Nutrition journal. This is the first of its kind which examines the environmental impacts of both dietary patterns and farm production systems.
Researchers of the study surveyed more than 34,000 French adults. The study evaluated the preferences of between plant-based and animal-based food products. They also conducted an environmental impact assessment at the farm. They included three indicators: greenhouse gas emissions, cumulative energy demand, and land occupation.
THE WHOLE FOOD DIET
Environment Friendly Reduced Green House Gases
“Combining consumption and farm production data, we found that across the board, diet-related environmental impacts were reduced with a plant-based diet — particularly greenhouse gas emissions,” says Louise Seconda. Seconda is from the French Agence De L’Environnement Et De La Maitrise De L’Energie, and is one of the study’s authors.
Diets were based on less consumption of animal products, as recommended by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. This recommendation comes from a more sustainability framework. Why? Because of the amount of energy requirements of livestock farming includes greenhouse gas emission caused by the livestock. This was outlined by the study.
CLIMATE BENEFITS | THE WHOLE FOOD DIET
Interestingly, researchers also found that organic food provides significant, additional climate benefits.
Seconda hoped that future studies can take into account other factors like pesticide use, leaching and soil quality. This would give a more extensive understanding of how the entire food production life cycle impacts sustainability.
“We wanted to provide a more comprehensive picture of how different diets impact the environment,” Seconda said of the study.
THE WHOLE FOOD DIET | ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY
We have created quite a mess with our food system nearly World Wide. Feeding ourselves is much easier than feeding the World. Taking our individual responsibility for feeding ourselves is much more controllable. Also much more effective then passing it along to BIG FOOD.
The Whole Food Diet (Plant Based) is not only healthier for us it is Healthier for the World. Consider the consequences of feeding yourself/Family with whatever you can do.
Start small. Container Gardening is a good start.
